Denture Aftercare

Your new denture may feel uncomfortable or strange at first, but your mouth should adjust to it within a few days. You may feel you are speaking differently but this is entirely normal until your mouth adjusts.

After eating always clean your denture by rinsing in cold water and by brushing away any debris with a soft toothbrush.

Always clean your denture over a basin of cold water so that if it falls it does not break.

Before bed, brush your denture with a soft brush and some soap, hand soap is fine, then rinse and soak overnight in clean water.

Soak your denture for 20 minutes once or twice per week in a denture cleaning solution.Rinse with cold water then soak overnight in water. Do not allow your denture to soak for more than 12 hours as this can cause the denture to warp.

Do not sleep with your denture in unless you have been told to do so by your clinician. This allows your gums to rest and promotes good oral health.

Metal based dentures can be damaged by acid-based cleaners such as Denclean or Deepclean. Soak your metal based denture in an effervescent cleaner such as Steradent or Boots Effervescent/Double Action for 15 minutes then soak overnight in clean water.

Dentures with soft linings, please avoid using hard toothbrushes for cleaning and avoid toothpaste or effervescent cleaners due to being a softer material for comfort.

If you accidentally break your denture, do not stick in back in place with superglue as this may result in us being unable to repair it properly. Superglue should never be used in your mouth. If this happens please contact your dentist or the lab here in Carnoustie.
